Tough debut for walker

Ashford AC’s young race walker, Jonathan Hobbs, had a tough international debut on the sun-soaked shores of lake Geneva.
With Britain’s top two race walkers concentrating on qualifying for the Olympics, 19 year old Jonathan was invited to represent England’s senior team last weekend.
Switzerland hosted a six nations race walking match near Geneva and Jonathan, originally selected for the junior 10km team, when asked to step up to the senior 20km race never hesitated.
With shade temperatures of over 29 C and an early afternoon race providing very little shade the hot conditions made it a tough race for the 39 competitors from Switzerland, Holland, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and England.
“It was probably the toughest conditions I have ever raced in and and I slowed a little at half way but didn’t fade as much as most and was really pleased with my 6th place overall ,” said a tired but happy Jonathan, the youngest in the race. “My coach advised me to keep in the shade as much as possible but there was hardly any in the scenic location by the famous lake but it was a great experience ” he added.
